bladder Problems? These Pelvic Floor Exercises Will Help You
There are about 25 million Americans who suffer from it.
Dr. David Glazier is co-director of the Pelvic Floor Centre in Richmond, and I quote him. “urinary incontinence is a very insidious process. It occurs very slowly; people think it’s a normal part of aging.”
But it does not have to be. Not only is this something for our senior citizens to be concerned about, there are numerous other groups of people affected.
- Women before and after giving birth
- Competitors for extreme sports
- People suffering from great stress
- People who have had a prolapse
There are a lot of medical procedures that your doctor can recommend but there is one easy way for you to treat it now. You are definitely going to feel better after a few weeks of continuously doing pelvic floor exercises. During pilates sessions, I teach these exercises. Actually, I’m proof of the pudding because I did suffer a prolapsed some years ago, but there is no sign of it any longer.
Your pelvic floor muscles resemble the shape of a sling and are located at the base of your torso, just below the abdomen. They play an important role in helping to hold everything up. It isn’t surprising how they become weak through the years.
It’s best to do these pelvic floor exercises on your back, with knees bent.
- Take in a deep breath
- As you exhale you need to contract the pelvic floor by drawing in up into the body. This action MUST be done on the exhaled breath
- Tip for women : Draw up area around vagina
- Tip for men: (yes, men do have a pelvic floor), draw up the testicles
This exercise has a 50% success rate and it’s esafer and easier to do than opting for surgery. They work!
